Mark Varboncouer   Mark Varboncouer is the founder of Varboncouer Law.  Mark is an experienced attorney who spent 10-plus years with Kirkland & Ellis LLP (“one of the nation's largest and most prestigious law firms”/“‘one of the ‘Fearsome Foursome’—the four firms most likely to strike fear in opposing counsel”); and 4-plus years with another highly-prestigious 1,000-plus attorney law firm, McGuireWoods LLP   Mark has handled a wide array of Business issues (see examples on Practice Areas page), and Contracts & Intellectual Property Issues (see examples on Practice Areas page)—and he enjoys using his experience in these areas to address all the myriad legal needs of a Business. Mark can also address many of an individual’s legal needs, including Contracts, Litigation, Intellectual Property, and Estate Planning (e.g., Wills, trusts, probate & business succession).     Mark is also an experienced litigator (in state and federal courts), and his knowledge at side bars so impressed one federal court judge that the court referred to Mark as “The Evidence Man.”  On one occasion, the court sought his input on an issue even though he had not been involved in argument of that issue.  Mark has litigated a wide variety of issues, including business issues, contracts, contract interpretation, real estate, and intellectual property.    Mark’s litigation experience gives Mark a unique and invaluable perspective when handling all the various needs of a business (including drafting contracts) because everything is viewed through a litigator’s lens as to how issues might be argued by attorneys and be perceived by a judge or a juror—so that the many needs of a business can be handled in a manner that is best calculated to help those Businesses avoid, and prevail in, any later potential litigation   Select Quotes: “sees all angles and uncovers every detail in these highly complicated patent litigation matters” “gives new meaning to the phrase ‘leaves no stone unturned’” “mesmerizing” (mock trial closing) “I’d buy whatever he’s selling!” (juror at a mock trial) “boy you really persuaded me. . . was really profound and you know when you can move me after having heard this so many times into a whole different place it’s like I'm hearing this for the very first time . . . that's the power of persuasion” “anticipates every possible question that a judge might ask himself while reading our brief, and every possible avenue of questioning in preparing witnesses for deposition or trial testimony” “the master at creative ways to overcome obstacles” “ability to see subtle distinctions and creatively make wiggle room where I would have sworn none existed is unparalleled”   Prior Career as a Chemical Engineer & Wide Array of Technologies Handled:  Prior to his legal career, Mark obtained a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois, and worked for 9 years in the chemical and petrochemical industries. As an engineer, he acquired experience with a variety of technologies including chemical, mechanical, material, electrical & computer.  Additionally, during his legal career Mark worked on cases involving a very wide array of technologies, such as organometallic catalysis, bromination processes, magnetics, materials, engine systems, thin films, genetic engineering, polymers, medical, cellular, encryption, and computer hardware and software.    Presentations:  Mark has presented on trade secrets, electronic evidence, alternative dispute resolution, and patent law, and he previously taught “Patent Law for Engineers” at SAE headquarters in Detroit, Michigan.   Distinctions:  While a chemical engineer at Union Carbide, he was honored with the prestigious “Chairman’s Award.” DISCLAIMER:  Case results do not guarantee or predict a similar result in any future case undertaken by a lawyer.  Case results depend upon a variety of factors unique to each case.  Attorney at Law
